2009 Yukon Quest champ Sebastian Schnuelle works tirelessly at self-promotion. He submitted this heartwarming picture of a typical day at the Schnuelle dog camp to the Yukon News. Mr. Schnuelle would have been well advised to have closed his curtains as you can see the miserable conditions of his dog yard outside the window. Look at the cheap plastic rain barrels that serve as dog houses. Hopefully this big Yukon hero spent some of his first place prize money to add a couple of feet to the chains and build some decent houses for those forced to haul his sorry carcass across hill and dale. What you see outside Schnuelle's window is a common way for mushers to keep dogs in the Yukon. Why spend a lot of money housing them when they are subject to being shot, driven by the truckload to the back door of the local sled dog veterinarian to be put down, or being sold or given away to the first taker, when they are no longer capable of bringing fame and fortune to the dog racers?
